What’s great about Scunthorpe?

Scunthorpe
Scunthorpe

So you’re thinking about moving to Scunthorpe, and you want to know a little about the town. Where shall we begin?

Scunthorpe is an industrial town in Lincolnshire. And not just any industrial town; it’s the capital of British Steel, and the steelworks dominate the skyline. Although the industry has gone through difficult times it’s still one of the largest employers in the area and has a big impact on most of the residents.

Scunthorpe is a lovely town with a growing reputation for the arts, with plenty of things to do locally. In the town itself there are the Baths Hall and Plowright Theatre for your live entertainment, and the Vue Cinema for big screen moments.

If you’re visiting for the arts, then you’ll want to fit in a visit to the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. The centre is an exhibition space for underrepresented artists, and puts on exhibitions, shows and touring events throughout the year.

Plenty of space for exercise

A little further afield you’ll find Normanby Hall Country Park, a beautiful 300-acre estate with woodland trails, walled gardens and a café. You can look around the stunning Regency Mansion, pop into the gift shop, ride the land train and take a walk through the Deer Park.

If sport is more your thing, then you’ll love The Pods, the largest sports and fitness facility in North Lincolnshire. With a large swimming pool, a six-court sports hall, fitness studios and gym you’re sure to find an activity you can enjoy.

And who wouldn’t love a trip to the seaside. Although Scunthorpe itself doesn’t have a beach, it’s just a short drive to Cleethorpes, where you can enjoy a walk along the sand and then stop at Papa’s Fish and Chips on the pier.

Entertainment for everyone

As well as the cinema, Scunthorpe has plenty to keep you entertained. There’s a bowling alley, trampoline park and all the usual high street shops, as well as the Parishes Shopping Centre, Gallagher Retail Park and North Lincolnshire Shopping Park.

Scunthorpe is also home to the North Lincolnshire Museum, which features a number of hands-on displays and family friendly exhibits to explore as you discover more about the history of the area.

Things for kids to enjoy
Pink Pig Farm, Scunthorpe

We couldn’t finish without mentioning some of the wonderful attractions for kids to enjoy too, starting with the Pink Pig Farm. Children will love the chance to get up close to the animals and find out more about a working farm, before hopping on a tractor ride and then heading off to the indoor play zone.

For older children and adventurous adults, book in to Go Ape at Normanby Hall. One of the newer courses, it’s apparently also the highest as well. Prepare to swing through the trees and leap (safely) from high walk to cargo nets.

We think you have to agree that Scunthorpe is a wonderful family town with plenty to offer. And we’re clearly not alone – in 2021 it was named as one of the top 20 places in the UK with largest average house price increases. So, if you’re planning on relocating, remember that we’re on hand to help. Our brand new storage facility is ideal for keeping your furniture and belongings safe and secure during your house move.
